SEO for Trade Businesses: Why Your Website Is Not Getting Leads

You have tried SEO companies before.

You have paid the invoices.

You have had the monthly reports.

You have probably heard phrases like rankings, backlinks, domain authority, search volume and technical optimisation.

But let’s be honest.

Do you actually know if it is working?

Most trade business owners do not.

They pay an SEO company every month and hope something magical is happening in the background. Sometimes it is. A lot of the time, it is not.

SEO companies can work. There are good ones out there. But from my own experience, both in my old driveway business and now through working with trade business owners, you often need to kiss a lot of frogs before you find one that truly understands your business.

That is why I decided years ago to learn SEO myself.

Not because I wanted to become a web designer.

Not because I wanted to sit studying Google all day.

I learned it because I had no choice.

I needed leads.

I needed the phone to ring.

I needed people to find my business online without paying thousands every month for adverts.

And if you own a trade business, you need to understand at least the basics of SEO too.

You do not need to become an expert. But you do need to know enough to understand what should be happening on your website.

A Pretty Website Means Nothing Without SEO

A nice website is not enough.

You can have the best looking website in your area. It can have beautiful photos, a fancy logo, lovely colours and all the right words.

But if nobody finds it on Google, it is just sitting there doing nothing.

Having a great website without SEO is like having a brilliant shop on the high street with no sign, no lights and blacked out windows.

Nobody knows it is there.

And if nobody finds your website, you will struggle to generate consistent leads.

You might still get some enquiries. But many of them will come from people who already know you.

They may have seen your van.

They may follow you on social media.

They may have been referred by someone.

They may have searched your business name directly.

That is all good.

But that is not proper organic lead generation.

Proper organic leads come from strangers who search for the service you offer, in the area you cover, and find your business on Google.

That is where the money is.

What SEO Actually Means for a Trade Business

SEO simply means helping your website show up when people search for what you do.

For example, if you are a plumber in Leeds, you want people to find you when they search:

“plumber in Leeds”

“plumbing company in Leeds”

“emergency plumber Leeds”

“bathroom plumbing Leeds”

If you are a landscaper in Edinburgh, you want to appear when people search:

“landscaper in Edinburgh”

“garden design Edinburgh”

“driveway company Edinburgh”

“patio installation Edinburgh”

These are not random visitors.

These are buyers.

They already want the service.

They are already looking.

The question is simple.

Will they find you, or will they find your competition?

Page One of Google Matters

If you are on page two of Google, you are almost invisible.

That might sound harsh, but it is true.

Most people do not scroll through pages and pages of search results. They click one of the businesses near the top.

That is why your goal should be to appear as high as possible for the services and locations that matter most to your business.

You do not just want traffic.

You want targeted traffic.

There is no point ranking for random keywords that never turn into enquiries. You want to rank for the searches that bring in real customers.

That means service based keywords.

It means location based keywords.

It means content that matches what your ideal client is actually typing into Google.

The Biggest SEO Mistake Trade Businesses Make

The biggest mistake I see is this.

Trade business owners build one general website and expect it to rank for everything.

They have one homepage that says they do patios, driveways, landscaping, fencing, decking, artificial grass, drainage, garden rooms and everything else.

Then they wonder why Google does not know what to rank them for.

Each core service needs its own strong page.

Your driveway page should be about driveways.

Your patio page should be about patios.

Your fencing page should be about fencing.

Your landscaping page should be about landscaping.

Each page should have a clear title, clear headings, strong local keywords, good images, proper image names, alt text, internal links and a clear call to action.

That is how you give Google confidence.

That is also how you give your customer confidence.

Simple SEO Tips for Trade Business Owners

Here are some simple things you can start looking at today.

1. Use the Right Keywords

Your website needs to clearly say what you do and where you do it.

For example:

“We are a plumbing company in Leeds specialising in boiler repairs, bathroom plumbing and emergency call outs.”

That is much better than:

“We provide high quality services with years of experience.”

Google needs clarity.

Your customers need clarity too.

2. Give Every Page a Different Title

Every page on your website should have a unique SEO title.

Your homepage should not have the same title as your service pages.

For example:

“Plumber in Leeds”

“Boiler Repairs Leeds”

“Bathroom Plumbing Leeds”

“Emergency Plumber Leeds”

Each page should target something specific.

3. Create Pages for Your Main Services

Do not try to cram every service onto one page.

If you offer five core services, build five strong pages.

This gives Google more content to rank.

It also helps potential customers land on the exact service they are searching for.

4. Make Your Website Easy to Navigate

Your website should be clean, simple and easy to use.

People should quickly understand:

Who you are.

What you do.

Where you work.

Why they should trust you.

How they can contact you.

If your website is confusing, people leave.

When people leave quickly, that does not help your SEO.

5. Send Traffic to Your Website

Your social media should not just live on Instagram or Facebook.

Send people to your website.

Share blog posts.

Share project pages.

Share case studies.

Share before and after galleries.

More traffic can help Google see that people are interested in your website.

It also gives potential customers more time to understand your business.

6. Keep Your Website Updated

A dead website does not inspire confidence.

Add new projects.

Write blog posts.

Update your photos.

Improve your service pages.

Add reviews.

Google likes fresh, useful content.

So do customers.

7. Check Your Website Speed

A slow website loses leads.

If your website takes ages to load, people will leave before they even see your work.

Large images are often the problem.

Your photos need to look good, but they also need to be properly compressed and uploaded in the right size.

SEO Is Not Just About Google

SEO is not only about rankings.

It is also about trust.

When someone lands on your website, they are asking themselves:

Can I trust this company?

Do they look professional?

Have they done work like mine before?

Are they local?

Do they have good reviews?

Is it easy to contact them?

This is where a lot of trade websites fail.

They might get some traffic, but the website does not convert.

That means people visit the site but do not enquire.

A good trade website needs both.

It needs to rank.

And it needs to convert.

Traffic without enquiries is pointless.

Why I Teach SEO Inside The Off The Tools Programme

Inside Module 2 of my Off The Tools Programme, we go deep into positioning, branding, websites, SEO and online visibility.

This is not theory.

This is practical.

I show trade business owners what actually needs to be on their website, how to structure service pages, how to understand keywords and how to stop being completely reliant on other companies.

This does not mean you need to do everything yourself.

You might still hire an SEO company.

You might still hire a web designer.

But after this module, you will know what they should be doing.

You will know what questions to ask.

You will know if your website is being improved properly.

And if you have the time, you may even decide to do some of it yourself.

That is what I did.

I still do a lot of my own SEO here at TradeCoach because I understand it and I know how valuable it is.

You may not have the time to do that.

But you should absolutely understand what is happening.

Paid Ads Are Not Always the Answer

One thing you will rarely hear me talk about is paid ads.

Not because paid ads never work.

They can work.

But they are not always required if you nail your positioning, your website and your SEO.

Too many trade businesses jump straight into paid ads because they need leads quickly.

Then they end up paying for every click, every enquiry and every lead.

That can get expensive fast.

For me, paying thousands every month for leads was not an option when I started.

I was skint.

So I had to learn how to generate leads without a massive ad budget.

That meant SEO.

It meant local visibility.

It meant word of mouth.

It meant proper positioning.

It meant making sure people could find me when they were ready to buy.

Free Leads Are Possible When You Build the Right System

In Module 3 of the Off The Tools Programme, we go deep into lead generation.

When you combine Module 2 and Module 3, you start to build a proper lead generation system.

Not random posting.

Not hoping.

Not waiting for referrals.

A system.

You understand how to position your business.

You understand how to make your website work.

You understand how to get found on Google.

You understand how to turn attention into enquiries.

You understand how to generate steady, targeted leads throughout the year.

That is what trade business owners need.

Not more guesswork.

Not another SEO report they do not understand.

Not another pretty website that brings in no work.

They need a proper system that gets the phone ringing.

What now….

If you own a trade business, you cannot ignore SEO.

Your customers are already searching on Google.

The only question is whether they are finding you or your competitors.

You do not need to become a full time SEO expert.

But you do need to understand the basics.

You need to know what keywords matter.

You need to know what pages your website needs.

You need to know how your website should be structured.

You need to know whether the people you are paying are actually helping your business grow.

A pretty website is not enough.

A website that gets found, builds trust and brings in leads is what matters.

That is exactly what we cover inside the Off The Tools Programme.

Because when you get your positioning, website, SEO and lead generation right, you stop relying on luck.

You build a business that attracts leads properly.

And that is when things start to change.

To your success,

Daren
