The Importance of a good Work-Life Balance
I am a massive advocate of looking after mind, soul and body. Without a good you there is NO business therefore lifestyle coaching is something I offer to all my clients via various means, templates, plans and advice. What is the point of a successful business where you cannot enjoy the fruits of your hard work or £5m pounds in the bank when you're 70 with crippling illness or disease. We work on this a lot in any business coaching capacity I take.
During a recent Tradecoach Retreat, I had the opportunity to facilitate a powerful exercise with the group that left a lasting impact on me. We completed the Wheel of Life, a tool designed to help individuals assess various aspects of their lives, including family, relationships, finances, hobbies, and health. As participants filled out the document and assigned scores out of ten, I anticipated a range of insights.
What I saw, however, was both eye-opening and disheartening. While finances and career satisfaction consistently scored high—between 8 and 10 for everyone—the scores for relationships, health, hobbies, and overall happiness told a different story. It was a stark contrast that saddened me deeply.
In an attempt to gauge how many people were actively engaging in enjoyable activities, I asked the group to raise their hands if they participated in hobbies at least twice a month. You could hear a pin drop—only **one person** raised his hand!
Let that sink in: out of 24 successful individuals, only one claimed to make time for something they genuinely enjoyed.
Imagine if each of these individuals was earning £1 million in net profits every year. Would that wealth matter if they couldn’t spend it on what truly brings them joy? It’s a sobering thought.
This brings us to a crucial question: What is the point of working so hard if we’re not allowing ourselves to enjoy life?
Yes, I understand the importance of hard work in achieving our goals. It’s essential to put in the effort and dedication necessary to succeed. But we must also recognize that life is meant to be enjoyed. Success without fulfillment is hollow.
The reality is that while we strive for financial and career achievements, neglecting our personal happiness and well-being can lead to burnout and dissatisfaction. The hustle culture often glorifies endless work at the expense of leisure and joy, but that shouldn’t be the case.

So, how can we bring joy back into our lives? Here are a few suggestions:
1. Schedule Your Hobbies: Just as you would schedule a meeting or an important work task, set aside time for activities that bring you joy. Whether it’s painting, hiking, or playing a musical instrument, make it a priority.
2. Connect with Loved Ones: Invest time in building and nurturing relationships. Quality time with family and friends can rejuvenate your spirit and provide a much-needed escape from work pressures.
3. Practice Mindfulness: Take a moment each day to reflect on what brings you happiness. Mindfulness practices, like meditation or journaling, can help you reconnect with your passions and desires.
4. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Protecting your time for enjoyment is crucial to maintaining balance and preventing burnout.
At the end of the day guys, life is not just about the numbers or the accolades; it’s about the experiences we create and the joy we find along the way. If we can’t enjoy our successes, then what’s the point?
Let’s strive to work hard, yes, but let’s also commit to enjoying life. Rediscover your passions, make time for happiness, and remember that true success encompasses more than just financial gain. Together, we can find that balance and live a fulfilling life.
To a fulfilled, health, happy life
