10-0 Coaching: 3 Simple Strategies to Instantly Outperform Your Competition

10-0 Coaching: 3 Simple Strategies to Instantly Outperform Your Competition

24 October 2025

What you’re about to read are three practical, zero-cost actions you can implement immediately in your trades business to stand out from your competition—literally overnight.

These are what we call the CNEsCritical Non-Essentials. They’re small touches that may not seem essential at first, but when applied consistently, they become absolutely critical to your success.

We refer to this approach as 10-0 Coaching — the idea being that if you apply 10 of these CNEs, you’ll already be miles ahead of your competition. In reality, the programme has evolved so much that it should probably be called 20-0 Coaching today, because each of these simple improvements adds another layer of professionalism, trust, and value that separates you from everyone else in your field.

1. The Neighbour’s Letter

If you’re in an industry that involves visible outdoor work — driveways, landscaping, roofing, solar panels, or windows and doors — this one is gold.

It’s called the Neighbour’s Letter.

Here’s how it works: before starting a job (ideally a few days before), deliver a letter to the homes surrounding your client’s property — around 10 houses on each side and 20 across the road, if possible.

The letter itself is simple but powerful. It politely informs neighbours that your company will be carrying out work nearby, outlines the estimated duration (for example, 10 days), and addresses potential concerns such as noise, parking, and dust. It ends with a courteous note offering contact details if they have any questions — and, of course, a line inviting them to get in touch for a free quote.

Make no mistake — it’s a sales letter in disguise.

But it also positions you as the most considerate contractor in the area.

Many tradespeople who use this tactic find that neighbours actually call them just to say how thoughtful it was. Some even hold onto the letter for future reference — or pass it on to friends and family.

Better still, you can use the letter as a selling tool during your original quotation visit. When speaking to the client, say:

“Before we start, we’ll also drop one of these through all your neighbours’ doors — just to let them know there’ll be some noise, vans parked nearby, maybe a skip. We like to keep everyone informed.”

Clients love this. It instantly sets you apart from the horror stories they’ve heard about disruptive contractors blocking driveways or leaving a mess. It shows professionalism, transparency, and genuine care — qualities that win trust fast.

And the payoff doesn’t stop there. Once the job begins, those neighbours who’ve been watching your work all week will already know who you are — and when they see the finished result, they’re far more likely to call you next.

2. The “On Route” Call

Next is a simple one — but it makes a huge difference.

When you’re heading to an appointment or site visit, don’t text. Call the client.

Here’s how the conversation might go:

“Hi Mr Jones, it’s Darren from Tradecoach. I’ve got an appointment with you today between 2 and 3 o’clock — just calling to let you know I’m on my way, and my sat-nav says I’ll be there about ten past two.”

Watch how the tone shifts. At first, the client might sound tense — assuming you’re calling to cancel. But when they realise you’re simply being courteous, their voice lightens. They’re grateful. They might even share a bit of friendly banter or give you directions (despite the fact you just said you have sat-nav).

And when you arrive? You’re already on first-name terms. The rapport has started before you’ve even knocked on the door.

This tiny professional courtesy removes awkwardness and sets a positive tone from the start. Instead of “Sorry, I forgot you were coming” or the dreaded “What company are you with again?”, you’re greeted with warmth and familiarity.

People buy from people — and this call humanises your business immediately. It’s a simple but powerful step that most of your competitors simply don’t take.

3. Quote Presentation

Most tradespeople send quotes that look identical. A standard email or a basic PDF exported from Xero or QuickBooks, often just one or two lines like:

“Hi Mr Jones, thanks for seeing me. Your quote for the new windows and doors is £12,448. Let me know if you’d like to go ahead.”

That’s it. No context, no presentation, no effort.

But this is where you can easily pull ahead.

How you present your quote can be the difference between winning and losing the job.

Think about it this way: if every other part of your process is the same as your competitor’s, but your quote looks professional, branded, and thoughtfully laid out, who’s more likely to win? Often it’s the small, seemingly insignificant details that tilt the decision in your favour.

When I ran my own landscaping company, I included a subtle internal reference code at the top of each quote — something like MB50. That might not mean much to the client, but to us, it instantly told the team that the job was assigned to fitter Mark Brown (MB), it covered 50 square metres, and was planned as a three-day job.

That one little code meant our scheduling was always clear, our communication was tight, and our operation ran like clockwork.

And when clients saw a clean, professional document that looked well-organised and confident — they trusted us more.

The Bigger Picture: It’s You vs. Them

Everything about 10-0 Coaching comes down to this mindset: you vs. your competition.

Ask yourself constantly:

  • What are they not doing?

  • What are they not saying?

  • Where can I go one step further?

Because when your business consistently delivers on those small but powerful touches — the letter, the phone call, the polished quote — you lift yourself to a level where clients stop comparing you on price.

They’re buying trust, confidence, and professionalism.

That’s the difference between winning the job at your price — and losing it to someone cheaper.

Applying 10-0 Coaching

At this point, you’ve learned three simple but highly effective CNEs — small, smart strategies that instantly separate you from your competition. But these aren’t just quick tips; they’re part of a bigger philosophy that helped me transform my own business and, ultimately, my life.

During the years I was growing that company, I used the profits to invest in property — an avenue I believe every tradesperson should at least consider.

Today, I own just under £2 million worth of property across the UK, plus a home abroad. I don’t teach property investment professionally as a standalone subject, but it’s an integral part of my course because it’s such a natural extension for anyone in the trades.

Why? Because as a tradesperson, you already have the skills, contacts, and industry insight that give you a massive advantage in property development and renovation. You can spot potential, estimate costs accurately, and execute improvements that create real equity — all without paying third-party contractors for everything.

If you’re serious about building long-term wealth and not just working for weekly cash flow, property can be one of the smartest routes forward. Of course, it’s not the only investment path — but for many in the trades, it’s the most aligned with what they already know and do best.

Your Next Step

Each of these adds a small, measurable edge — and together, they start to shift how clients perceive you. You move from being “just another contractor” to being the contractor they want to hire, even if your price is higher.

If you want to go further — to stack even more of these simple yet powerful strategies — I invite you to book a discovery call with me. On that call, we’ll talk about your business, what’s working, what’s not, and I’ll give you three more CNEs you can plug straight into your operation.

Because when you start stacking these — when you go from 3-0 to 6-0, and eventually to 20-0 — you stop competing on price entirely. You become the clear, trusted choice in your market.

Final Thoughts

Everything we do at Tradecoach comes down to one principle: helping you outperform, outpresent, and outdeliver your competition — not through gimmicks, but through genuine professionalism and care.

These small changes, repeated consistently, create big results. They turn your business from reactive to strategic, from surviving to scaling, from being one of many to being one of a kind.

If you’re ready to take that next step, let’s talk. Book a free call, get your next three CNEs, and start building a business that works as hard for you as you’ve worked for it.

Your business growth starts here — and it starts today.
