- How I Built a Successful Trades Business
In business, timing is everything. And when a multi-million-pound investment group offered me nearly £1 million for 90% of my trades business, I was shocked.
I believed it was worth more—but to be approached at all? It felt surreal.
This “wee business” I’d poured years into… someone saw it as a million-pound company.
But the real story isn’t just about the sale—it’s about what happened next, and why it fuels my passion today as a business coach.
How We Built a Business Investors Wanted
Our success didn’t happen by chance.
This was a team effort—me, my wife, my business coach, and our small but mighty crew. Together, we built something solid:
-
Consistent £30,000–£40,000 net profit each month
-
High-quality projects that still look amazing today
-
A systemised, well-run business that almost operated itself
It was a cash-generating machine, and it ran without chaos. That’s what made it so attractive to buyers.
What Happened After the Sale
When the new owners took over, they brought their own experts: accountants, marketers, recruiters—the works.
I expected improvements. Instead, I saw disaster.
-
A £80k General Manager was hired with no experience in the trade
-
Systems were ignored
-
Quality and culture dropped
-
Suppliers started chasing payments
-
The phone began ringing with complaints and confusion
I stopped asking questions because the answers hurt. What we’d built was unraveling fast.
The Fall of a Successful Trade Business
Just 6–8 months later, I saw an article in the local press. The business had been sold again, this time to a millionaire oil tycoon and former owner of Dundee FC.
The plan? Take it commercial.
The outcome? To this day, I’m not sure they’re even still trading.
What I do know is this: what we built was special, and it’s a big reason I do what I do now.
Why This Matters If You Want to Build a Successful Trades Business
That experience proved one thing:
You don’t need a huge team to build a million-pound business—you need systems, standards, and leadership.
When I coach tradespeople today, I draw directly from this story. Because I’ve lived both sides:
- The grind of building from nothing
- The systems that make it run without you
- The heartbreak of watching it fall apart in the wrong hands
And I’ve used those lessons to help other UK tradespeople build and grow profitable, systemised businesses.

What I’m Good At (And What I’m Not)
- Ask my wife how tidy I am around the house—you won’t get a glowing review.
- Ask my kids if I can bake or draw—same again.
But ask my clients if I can grow a trades business?
The answer’s always the same: Absolutely.
