Nutrition and Business

What Does Nutrition Have to Do with Business?

If you run a trades business, you might be wondering what nutrition has to do with anything. You want to grow your business, improve your pricing, recruit better people, and generate more leads.

So why are we talking about food?

The short answer? Because your energy and focus drive everything in your business.
And nutrition directly affects both.

A Typical Day Starts Here…

Most tradesmen (and many women) start their day on the go.

  • No breakfast.

  • Straight into the van.

  • Maybe a bacon roll and a coffee from a roadside van.

That bacon roll? High in carbs and fat.
The coffee? Packed with caffeine.

At first, you feel energised. But after an hour or two, your energy crashes.

And then?

  • You feel tired.

  • You lose focus.

  • You get grumpy.

  • You reach for a Red Bull.

The cycle repeats.

This pattern is common in the trades industry. But it’s also quietly affecting your performance as a business owner.

I Tested My Own Diet—and Got a Shock

Last year, I took part in the ZOE nutrition trial. I wore a sensor that tracked my blood sugar for two weeks.

I thought I ate pretty well. My typical breakfast was:

  • Swiss muesli

  • Freshly squeezed orange juice

Sound healthy, right?

Not quite.

My Zoe score for that meal? 22 out of 100.

I was shocked.

Turns out my muesli was packed with sugar. So was the orange juice. I thought I was fuelling myself—but I was actually setting myself up for an energy crash by 10am.

What Foods Actually Gave Me Energy?

Through the ZOE app, I learned what worked for my body.

  • Eggs
  • Greens (yes, even as a Hearts fan, I had to admit it!)
  • Avocado
  • Apples
  • Broccoli and asparagus

I started eating meals like:

  • Scrambled eggs with coriander

  • Toast with avocado and boiled eggs

  • Green smoothies with spinach and banana

The difference was immediate.

I had steady energy, better concentration, and more motivation. I wasn’t crashing mid-morning or reaching for sugar. My work improved. So did my mood.

Nutrition Directly Impacted My Business

Here’s what started happening, fast:

  • I wrote more blog content for Tradecoach

  • I created new ads and tested ideas

  • I pushed my property business forward

  • I joined courses and live events

  • I made sharper decisions and got more done

All of this happened because I finally had the energy and mental clarity to perform at a higher level.

And it came from what I was eating.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Let me be real: I still have a full English from time to time. I still grab a vindaloo and a naan when the craving hits. But now I understand how my diet affects my energy—and that helps me plan around it.

The point is this:

Your diet could be the hidden factor holding your business back.

Better nutrition means:

  • Better sleep
  • Better mood
  • Better relationships
  • Better leadership
  • Better business growth

This Isn’t About Perfection

You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. Just start small:

  • Eat breakfast every day.

  • Swap sugary cereals for eggs or oats.

  • Add greens to your meals.

  • Drink water before your third cup of coffee.

Then watch what happens. You might find yourself with more clarity, better decision-making skills, and a renewed drive to build the business you’ve always wanted.

Your Body Fuels Your Business

  • If your energy dips by midday…
  • If you’re struggling to stay focused…
  • If your mood feels off most of the week…

Your nutrition could be the missing piece.

By fuelling your body right, you support your mind. And with a clearer, sharper mind, you build a better business.

Final Thought

You can’t out-hustle poor energy.
You can’t lead a team when you’re running on fumes.
And you can’t make high-level business decisions when you’re tired and distracted.

So yes—nutrition and trades business go hand in hand.

This blog post is your freebie hit. What you do with it is up to you.

PS – I found out my body hates Tennents Lager too. But sometimes, you’ve got to take the energy hit and enjoy a pint (or ten) with the boys. Balance, right?

Interested in ZOE?

Here’s the ZOE Nutrition Trial I used. It’s not cheap (about £500), but if you’re serious about taking care of your body and business, it’s worth looking into.
