Do you need a business coach…

Do You Need a Business Coach for Your Trade Business?

It depends.

It depends on what you want from your business, what you want from your life, and whether you are genuinely happy with where you are right now.

If you are earning good money, have control of your diary, enjoy your work, have systems in place, and still have time for your family, hobbies, and holidays, then maybe you do not need a business coach.

But if your trade business feels chaotic, if you are still too involved in everything, if profits are inconsistent, if your team relies on you for every decision, or if deep down you know your business has another gear, then a business coach could be one of the best investments you ever make.

I know that because I have been there myself.

My Experience With Business Coaching

Back in 2016, I started looking into business coaching.

At the time, I had no real idea what a business coach even cost. In my head, I thought I might be paying about £25 an hour. So when I first spoke to a coach who offered me group coaching for £1,600 per month, I nearly fell over.

It sounded mental to me.

But the number stayed in my head. It kept playing on my mind.

Eventually, I took the plunge and signed up with an ActionCoach for £1,250 per month for one-to-one coaching.

To be fair, he was decent. I did not regret it. He helped me, and the experience was positive overall. But within four or five months, I realised something important.

He did not truly understand the construction and trade industry.

He understood business generally, but he did not understand our world.

He did not understand weather delays, pricing mistakes, labour issues, poor site planning, job overruns, difficult customers, weak foremen, rushed surveys, and the constant pressure of trying to grow a business while still being dragged back onto the tools.

That matters.

Because when you run a trade business, generic business advice will only take you so far.

Why I Knew I Needed a Coach

The biggest sign was not that I was failing.

It was that I was improving, but not enough.

The business was getting better. Turnover was going up. Profits were improving. On the outside, things looked fine.

But deep down, I knew we had another level.

I knew there was another gear in the business, and I knew I was not fully unlocking it.

Despite all my effort, nothing dramatic was changing. I was still having those days and weeks where I felt frustrated, drained, and honestly close to packing it all in.

A lot of trade business owners know that feeling.

You are not broke.

You are not lazy.

You are not useless.

You are just stuck between where you are and where you know you should be.

That is often the moment a business coach becomes valuable.

What a Good Business Coach Actually Does

A good business coach does not just motivate you.

A good business coach gives you perspective, structure, accountability, and clarity.

Very often, they are not even telling you something you have never heard before. Sometimes they are simply forcing you to finally act on the things you already know you should be doing.

That is what happened to me.

My coaches often taught me things I already knew deep down, but had not implemented properly. Once I started taking action on those things, everything began to move.

Sometimes the value of coaching is not knowledge.

Sometimes the value is implementation.

And sometimes it is belief.

When a coach points to another client who is almost identical to you and says, “He is doing £1.5 million and making serious money,” you cannot help but think, maybe I can do that too.

That shift matters.

I remember looking at other driveway and landscaping companies in coaching groups and thinking exactly that.

Why not me?

They were not magicians. They were not ten times smarter than me. They were just further ahead, and they had systems, thinking, and actions that I could learn from.

So I listened. I implemented. Not every idea worked, but most of them did.

And within months, things started changing fast.

Signs You Might Need a Business Coach

If you are asking, “Do I need a business coach?”, there is a good chance you already know the answer.

Here are some of the clearest signs:

You are still too involved in everything

If the business cannot function without you, you do not own a business yet. You own a stressful job with overheads.

You are busy but not properly profitable

Many trade business owners are turning over decent money but still not taking home what they should be. Poor pricing, weak sales, poor planning, and lack of systems usually sit behind this.

Your diary is full but your life is poor

A packed diary means nothing if you are exhausted, constantly firefighting, missing family time, and wondering what the point of it all is.

You know your business has more potential

This one is huge. If you know you have another gear but cannot seem to unlock it, a coach can often help you see the blind spots that are holding you back.

You keep making the same mistakes

A coach helps you break patterns. Without outside input, many owners repeat the same problems for years.

You want to get off the tools

This is one of the biggest reasons trade business owners seek help. They know they cannot keep doing everything themselves forever.

The Biggest Mistake People Make When Choosing a Business Coach

The biggest mistake is choosing someone who has never built the kind of business you run.

That does not mean they have to be from your exact trade.

But if they do not understand trade businesses, they will miss half the problem.

Construction and trades are different.

You deal with labour, weather, wastage, scheduling, customer expectations, supply delays, snagging, site issues, and thin margins if you get it wrong.

So if you are looking for a business coach for your trade business, make sure they understand the reality of the industry.

Not theory.

Reality.

Can You Grow a Trade Business Without a Coach?

Yes, of course you can.

I eventually did.

After learning from several coaches, I went on to grow the business all the way through to sale.

But that does not mean coaching was not useful.

It absolutely was.

The coaching gave me new thinking, confidence, strategy, and momentum. It showed me what was possible. It helped me move quicker than I would have done on my own.

Could I have figured some of it out alone?

Probably.

Would it have taken longer?

Definitely.

Would I have made more mistakes?

Without question.

That is what coaching often does. It shortens the journey.

Is a Business Coach Worth the Money?

This depends on two things.

First, the quality of the coach.

Second, your willingness to implement.

A brilliant coach is wasted on someone who does nothing.

Equally, a motivated trade business owner can still be badly guided by the wrong coach.

The right coaching relationship can transform your pricing, sales, systems, recruitment, mindset, profit, and long-term lifestyle.

The wrong coach can just leave you with generic advice, a lighter bank account, and even more frustration.

That is why this decision matters.

Final Thoughts: Do You Need a Business Coach?

No, not everyone does.

But if you are overwhelmed, undercharging, stuck on the tools, constantly solving problems, or deep down know your business should be further ahead than it is, then yes, you should seriously consider it.

Because sometimes what you need is not more effort.

Sometimes you need better guidance.

Sometimes you need accountability.

Sometimes you need somebody who has already walked the road you are trying to walk.

That was certainly true for me.

And once I started learning, implementing, and seeing what was possible through other businesses like mine, everything changed.

That is how I knew I needed a coach.

Not because I was failing.

Because I knew I was capable of far more.
