Steps to Get Your Life Back

Steps to Get Your Life Back

7 September 2025

Why trades owners burn out

Running a trade business can swallow your week. You price at night, chase materials in the morning, then jump on the tools to keep the programme alive. The result is long days, thin margins and very little time for family or recovery. Getting your life back is not a luxury. It is a requirement for a business that lasts. The steps below are practical, proven, and designed for UK trades.

Step 1: Decide the role you want

Be clear about the future you are building toward. Do you want to be a working foreman who sells and installs a limited number of premium jobs each month, or a manager who wins work and runs teams? Pick the target role and write the 5 tasks that belong to it. Anything that does not fit is a candidate to delegate, outsource or delete.

Step 2: Set non-negotiable hours

Boundaries create breathing room. Choose your working window and protect it. For example, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:30 and a short admin block on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Put this in your email signature, voicemail and enquiry replies. You will lose the odd tyre kicker and gain respect from better clients.

Step 3: Create the Owner’s Week

Block recurring time for the work that moves the business forward.

  • Monday: team huddle and job readiness checks

  • Tuesday: estimates and procurement

  • Wednesday: site visits and quality checks

  • Thursday: marketing and pipeline follow up

  • Friday: finance and job costing review
Guard these blocks like site safety. Urgent tasks can be rescheduled. Your priorities cannot.

Step 4: Fix your enquiry filter

Too many poor enquiries will steal your time. Add a simple form or phone script that asks budget, timeline, location and the problem to solve. Offer two next steps only. A paid survey for complex projects or a quick call for smaller works. Clear choices improve lead quality and reduce back and forth.

Step 5: Price for profit, not hope

Burnout often hides inside thin margins. Know your hourly cost, overhead and break-even. Add a profit target and stick to it. Provide options in every quote so clients can choose scope rather than haggle. If a job cannot hit your target, walk away early. Protecting margin is protecting your evenings and weekends.

Step 6: Hire support before you think you can

You do not need a full-time office manager to feel relief. Start with a virtual assistant for two hours a day to manage enquiries, calendar, materials chasing and review requests. Add a bookkeeper for reconciliations and VAT. Freeing five hours a week is worth far more than the cost.

Step 7: Make site teams self-sufficient

Every call from site interrupts you. Give crews a clear scope, drawings or photos, a contacts list, and authority to make minor decisions within a budget limit. Keep materials lists inside a shared note with item codes and usual suppliers. The more answers they have at hand, the fewer calls you take.

Habits that keep your time yours

  • One inbox for enquiries, not three different apps

  • Every conversation ends with a next step and a date

  • Photos and site notes uploaded daily while still on site

  • A standing rule to stop quoting jobs outside your service area

  • A monthly review of job costing to kill unprofitable work

What to drop this month

  • Free Saturday morning site visits that never convert

  • Custom one-off jobs that wreck the schedule

  • Clients who ignore process and push for discounts

  • Late-night email marathons that produce poor quotes

Conclusion

Getting your life back is a sequence of small, firm choices. Choose the role you want. Guard your hours. Filter enquiries. Price correctly. Standardise, delegate and close the week with intention. Do these steps for a month and you will feel the pressure drop. Do them for a quarter and you will have a business that serves your life, not the other way round.
