THE WHEEL OF LIFE: What Every Tradesman Needs to Assess Right Now

THE WHEEL OF LIFE: What Every Tradesman Needs to Assess Right Now

15 June 2025

Running a trade business can feel like a never-ending sprint: quotes, invoices, jobs, emergencies, and chasing payments. In all that noise, it’s easy to ignore the rest of your life. But success in business means very little if your health, relationships, or personal happiness are falling apart. The Wheel of Life is a powerful tool used by high-performing business owners to check their balance, spot blind spots, and refocus their energy.

What Is the Wheel of Life?

The Wheel of Life is a simple but powerful self-assessment tool that helps you evaluate different areas of your life on a scale from 1 to 10. Created by coaching pioneer Paul J. Meyer, it’s been widely adopted by business coaches and personal development experts around the world.

Imagine a wheel divided into eight slices, each representing a key area of life. You rate your satisfaction in each category and plot it on the wheel. The result is a clear picture of where your life feels solid and where it’s falling flat.

The 8 Core Areas Typically Included

While the exact categories can vary, here are the eight most commonly used in the Wheel of Life and how they relate to tradespeople:

  1. Career/Business – Your satisfaction with your trade business, growth, and future.
  2. Finances – Income stability, savings, and feeling in control of your money.
  3. Health – Physical energy, mental health, sleep, and fitness.
  4. Relationships – Time and connection with family, friends, and loved ones.
  5. Personal Development – Learning, self-improvement, and confidence building.
  6. Recreation/Fun – Hobbies, rest, and doing things just for joy.
  7. Contribution/Giving – Making a difference beyond work, like volunteering or helping others.
  8. Environment – Your workspace, home, and the surroundings you live in.

These areas work together. If one is seriously out of balance, it will impact the others…and eventually, your business too.

Why the Wheel of Life Matters to Tradesmen

Tradesmen are known for their work ethic. Early starts, long days, and weekends spent catching up on paperwork or chasing overdue invoices are all too common. But this relentless focus on work often comes at the expense of everything else, including health, relationships, hobbies, even sleep.

Over time, this imbalance leads to burnout. You may have money in the bank but no energy to enjoy it. You might win more jobs but feel constantly stressed. The Wheel of Life exposes this imbalance clearly and quickly, helping you refocus not just on your business goals, but on your life as a whole.

Because real success isn’t just about turnover. It’s about feeling fulfilled across the board.

How to Use the Wheel of Life

Using the Wheel of Life is simple and takes just a few minutes:

  1. Draw a circle and divide it into 8 equal sections (like slices of pizza), each representing one life category.
  2. On a scale of 1 to 10, rate your current satisfaction in each area: 1 being “very dissatisfied” and 10 being “completely satisfied.”
  3. Mark those numbers on each slice and connect the dots.

You’ll probably notice that some areas are far lower than others. That’s normal. The key is to ask yourself:

  • Why is this area low?
  • What would a 10 look like?
  • What one small action could I take this week to improve it?

This visual snapshot helps you make conscious choices about where to put your energy next.

How the Wheel Helps Guide Your Business Strategy

It’s easy to build a business that eats your entire life. But is that really what you set out to do? The Wheel of Life acts as a compass, helping you align your business strategy with your personal values.

When you see that your finances are great but your health is failing, or that your career is thriving but your relationships are suffering, it forces you to ask a bigger question: What kind of life am I actually building?

Smart trade business owners use this tool not just to check in—but to plan. If one of your goals is more time for family, your business strategy should include hiring, delegating, or restructuring to create that space. The Wheel of Life helps ensure your business serves your life and not the other way around.

How to Maintain Balance as a Trade Business Owner

Balance isn’t something you achieve once and forget. It’s something you maintain regularly. Here are a few simple habits that help trade business owners stay grounded:

  • Weekly check-ins: Re-rate your Wheel of Life every week or month to track progress.
  • Prioritise non-work time: Block out family time, exercise, and rest before filling your calendar with jobs.
  • Use reminders: Set calendar alerts or phone notifications for self-care and development.
  • Get support: Whether it’s a coach, accountability partner, or community, having someone to talk to keeps you aligned and on track.

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Maintaining balance allows you to show up stronger in your business, for your team, and at home.
