How to Avoid the “Too Expensive” Objection Before It Happens
Clients only say you’re too expensive when your price shocks them. The solution? Pre-frame their expectations.
Here’s how:
1. Have a Budget Conversation Early
Many tradesmen avoid asking about budget because they fear scaring clients off. But when done right, it actually builds trust.
Instead of bluntly asking, try this:
“Mr. Jones, do you have a rough budget in mind? The reason I ask is that there are multiple options—some premium, some more affordable. I wouldn’t want to bring you samples of a top-tier system if you’re looking for something more cost-effective. For example, a full boiler installation can range from £X to £Y, depending on the quality and features. Would you say you’re looking at the higher or lower end of that range?”
This price conditions them. Now, they expect a number between X and Y, reducing sticker shock later.
2. Use Google Earth for Ballpark Estimates (Landscapers & Electricians)
Before a client call, use Google Earth to estimate property size. This lets you offer an initial rough estimate before even visiting.
For example, a landscaper could say:
“Based on your description and my rough measurements, a project like this typically costs between £35,000–£40,000. I’d be happy to come out and take precise measurements to confirm—does Tuesday work for a visit?”
This strategy filters out clients with unrealistic budgets before you invest time in a site visit.
3. Have a Pricing Structure Ready
If you’re an electrician, plumber, or builder, have a price list with standard rates for common jobs. This allows you to give a ballpark figure confidently.
And remember: If a client is going to say no based on price, it’s better to know early, before wasting time on a full quote.
The Bottom Line: Set Expectations & Save Time
Most pricing objections arise because clients don’t understand what they’re paying for. By qualifying them properly and giving them context before delivering the final quote, you avoid awkward conversations and wasted time.
