Great at Your Trade, But Sh*t at Business? Here’s What to Do

Great at Your Trade, But Sh*t at Business? Here’s What to Do

Great at Your Trade, But Sh*t at Business

You might be brilliant at what you do.

You might be the best landscaper in your area.

The plumber everyone recommends.

The electrician people wait months for.

The joiner who can turn a rough drawing into something unreal.

The driveway company that gets stopped in the street because every job looks mint.

But being great at your trade does not automatically make you great at business.

And do you know what?

That is absolutely okay.

You did not get into the trade because you dreamed of sitting in an office looking at numbers, chasing leads, managing staff, building systems and dealing with customer complaints.

You got into it because you were good with your hands.

You liked creating things.

You liked seeing a job go from a mess to something you could be proud of.

You liked earning good money from a skill most people do not have.

Then, slowly but surely, you got busy.

You took on another lad.

Then another.

You got a van.

Then another van.

You started winning bigger jobs.

Your turnover grew.

And before you knew it, you were not just a tradesman anymore.

You were running a business.

The problem is, nobody teaches you how to do that bit.

Nobody teaches you how to recruit properly.

Nobody teaches you how to generate leads consistently.

Nobody teaches you what a CRM is, never mind how to use one.

Nobody explains how to price jobs so you actually make profit.

Nobody explains how to manage projects, protect your margins, manage customers, build a sales process or create systems that mean your phone is not ringing every five minutes.

So what happens?

You get busier.

You take on more work.

You employ more people.

You turn over more money.

But somehow, you feel more stressed than ever.

You are doing 60, 70, maybe 80 hours a week.

You are still the one quoting.

Still the one solving problems.

Still the one dealing with the difficult customer.

Still the one chasing materials.

Still the one answering calls at night.

Still the one everyone depends on.

And despite all of that, you are not even sure what you are actually making.

That is the bit that needs fixed.

If You Don’t Know, You Don’t Know

You cannot beat yourself up for not knowing something nobody ever taught you.

Most tradesmen were taught the skill.

Not the business.

You might know exactly how to tile a bathroom, wire a house, build a wall, install a driveway, fit a kitchen or create a garden.

But that does not mean you should automatically know how to:

Create a lead generation plan.

Build a website that actually gets enquiries.

Track where every lead comes from.

Follow up quotes properly.

Increase your prices without losing all your work.

Hire the right people.

Train staff.

Run a project management system.

Create customer journeys.

Understand gross profit, net profit and cash flow.

Use a CRM.

Build systems.

Delegate.

Step off the tools.

None of that is common sense when you have never been shown it.

And the truth is, most trade business owners are winging it.

They might look successful from the outside.

Nice vans.

Busy diary.

Good turnover.

A few lads.

But behind the scenes, the business is often held together by the owner’s stress, long hours and phone battery.

That is not a business.

That is a job with more risk.

Being Busy Does Not Mean You Are Building a Business

This is something I see all the time.

A trade business owner says, “I am flat out. I cannot take on any more work.”

But when we dig into it, they do not know where the leads are coming from.

They do not know which jobs make the most money.

They do not know how many quotes they are winning.

They do not know whether their team is profitable.

They do not know what their actual hourly rate is.

They do not know how much money is leaking from poor estimating, mistakes, delays and bad job management.

They are busy, but not in control.

There is a massive difference.

A business that is busy can still be skint.

A business turning over £1 million can still have no money in the bank.

A business with ten staff can still rely entirely on one stressed owner.

That is why turnover means very little without systems, profit and control.

You Need to Learn the Business Side at the Right Time

This is exactly why I created the Off The Tools Programme.

I did not create it to give you more motivational nonsense.

I created it because I know what it feels like to be brilliant at the trade but clueless about the business side.

I built my driveway business from scratch.

I made mistakes.

I underpriced jobs.

I worked ridiculous hours.

I carried the stress.

I learned the hard way that being good on site is only one part of building a successful business.

The real growth came when I learned how to run the business properly.

How to get leads.

How to sell.

How to price.

How to recruit.

How to manage jobs.

How to understand the numbers.

How to build systems.

How to get the business out of my head.

And eventually, how to step back from the day to day and build something that did not rely on me being there every second.

That is what the Off The Tools Programme teaches.

Not all at once.

Not in a way that overwhelms you.

Not with corporate language that makes no sense.

It takes you through each stage at the right time.

First, we get clear on where you are now.

Then we work on the foundations.

Then the lead generation.

Then sales.

Then recruitment.

Then your numbers.

Then project delivery.

Then systems.

Then delegation.

Then building a business that gives you freedom rather than taking every hour of your life.

Because there is no point teaching you about systems before you understand what is actually happening in your business.

There is no point talking about recruiting before you know whether you can afford the right person.

There is no point telling you to get off the tools before the business is capable of running without you.

Everything comes in the right order.

That is the difference.

You Do Not Need to Be a Business Genius

You do not need to suddenly become some suited and booted businessman.

You do not need to become an accountant.

You do not need to understand every spreadsheet in the world.

You do not need to pretend you enjoy sitting in an office all day.

You just need to learn enough to take control.

You need to know your numbers.

You need a way of generating leads.

You need a proper sales process.

You need to understand how to recruit and manage people.

You need systems for quoting, jobs, customers and money.

You need to know what is happening in your business without having to chase every person, every day.

That is it.

Once you have that, you can still be the same person you have always been.

You can still love being on site.

You can still enjoy building things.

You can still get satisfaction from seeing a finished project.

But it becomes your choice.

You are no longer trapped there because the business cannot survive without you.

The Goal Is Not to Stop Being a Tradesman

The goal is not to turn you into someone you are not.

The goal is to give you options.

The option to take a holiday without your phone exploding.

The option to spend more time with your kids.

The option to work on bigger, more profitable projects.

The option to step back from the tools when your body starts telling you enough is enough.

The option to build a proper business that creates profit, assets and freedom.

You are already good at the hard bit.

You have a skill.

You have built a reputation.

You have worked your arse off.

Now it is time to learn the business side properly.

That is where TradeCoach comes in.

The Off The Tools Programme is designed for trade business owners who want more than just being busy.

It is for people who want more profit, more control, better staff, better systems and a business that gives them a life.

You do not need to know it all today.

You just need to be willing to learn.
