£57 That Changed My Life

I’ll never forget the day. Claire had gone for a haircut — one we could barely afford — and I sat at home wondering if starting a driveway company was really the right move.

Should I try windows and doors instead? Maybe just window cleaning?

I started texting Claire ideas. Dazzle Driveways? Direct Driveways? Nothing felt right.

Then it clicked. If the business name actually included the words people searched for, surely I’d get noticed.

The Edinburgh Driveway Company.

I checked online. The name and domain were available. I texted Claire: “I’ve got it — The Edinburgh Driveway Company!” Her reply was instant: “YES!”

That was January 2013, and I had no idea the next seven years would be the hardest, most painful, but also the most rewarding of my life.

Broke, Jobless, and Desperate

We were skint. I’d just been suspended from my job at Sky for “using initiative” — apparently breaching GDPR rules. Whatever the reason, I suddenly had no job, no income, and no safety net.

But one thing was clear: the lifeblood of any business is leads.

The problem? I had no money.

  • No budget for a website

  • No advertising spend

  • No chance of billboards, signage, or radio

So I decided: I’ll knock doors.

But I needed something to put in people’s hands.

The £57 Gamble

A mate from football, Stevie, worked at the local builders’ merchant. He invited me down, gave me samples, brochures, and products. Walking that yard was electric. I watched tradesmen loading up their vans and thought: one day that’ll be me, driving in with my own black pickup, jeans and chinos, a smart polo and gilet. Everyone will know my name.

But samples weren’t enough. I needed leaflets.

After hours of searching, I found the cheapest option: 1,000 leaflets for £57 from a company called Stuprint. We barely had the money, but I placed the order.

Then came the email I wasn’t expecting.
“Hi Daren, thanks for your order. Please forward us your artwork.”

Artwork? What even was that? Panic set in. No money left. No designer. No clue.

For a moment I thought about cancelling. Then I told myself: how hard can it be?

A Pixelated Start

Here’s the truth:

  • I’d never fitted a driveway in my life.

  • I had no photos.

  • I had no contacts.

So I stole an image from a driveway company in Inverness — far enough away, I thought. I threw it into a basic design, sent it off, and hoped for the best.

A week later, the leaflets arrived. The photo was so pixelated you could barely tell it was block paving. But the £57 was gone. They had to work.

Knocking on Doors

Corstorphine, Edinburgh. EH12. My first stop.

The rain poured. I started knocking. Door after door slammed shut. Then one bloke came out after I’d posted a leaflet through his door, ripped it up right in front of my face, and threw it back at me.

I was drenched, humiliated, and ready to give up.

But then I thought about Muirhouse.

That’s where I grew up. The home of Trainspotting. In the 80s, it was labelled the AIDS capital of Europe. Poverty was everywhere. My family had lived it for generations.

And I thought:
If I don’t break this cycle, who will? If I don’t change things, then my kids will grow up with Butlins and Craig Tara as their best holidays. Struggling every single month. No. Not anymore.

That thought lit a fire in me. I turned back, shoved two more leaflets through that man’s door, and carried on.

The Breakthrough

Thirty minutes later it happened.

A woman opened her door: “Yes, we’ve actually been thinking about a new driveway.”

Her name was Laura. My first ever lead. My first ever quote.

Buzzing, I carried on and secured another lead that same day. Then, through my old school pal Mandy, I got into the NHS portal and landed a third enquiry.

Three leads in a week.

And unbelievably — I sold two. a driveway and a patio.

Then reality hit me.

Who was going to fit them?

Because I could barely put up a shelf.

To be continued…

What This Taught Me

Looking back, that £57 wasn’t just the start of a business. It was the start of changing my family’s future.

The lesson? Don’t wait until you have everything perfect. Don’t wait until you feel ready.

I had no website. No portfolio. No experience. No clue. But I had belief, grit, and a willingness to keep going when it would’ve been easier to quit.

Sometimes, all it takes is one bold step forward — even if it’s messy, pixelated, and far from perfect.

Because that’s how £57 turned into millions.
