Time Management for Tradesmen: Maximising Productivity

As a tradesman in the UK, juggling multiple projects and tasks can often feel overwhelming. Constantly something to do and family time! ha! forget it!

“Are you even listening to me” is a phrase you have heard more than once from a loved one” 

Relationships and Family are important right? Otherwise what’s the point? Therefore it’s important we focus time on actually ‘creating’ the time to be with them, to be present otherwise seriously ‘what’s the point!”

With effective time management techniques, you can accomplish more in less time but you must commit to putting in the work and more importantly being disciplined to achieving it. Here are some strategies to help you make the most of your valuable time:

  1. Prioritise tasks: END (not start) each day by identifying the most important tasks that need to be completed the following day, write them down (this will aid sleep also) allowing you to focus your time and energy on high-priority activities the next day. Write or type them down – it’s important
  2. Break larger tasks into smaller steps: Large projects can seem daunting, but breaking them down into smaller, more manageable tasks can make them easier to tackle. Create a list of action steps for each project and focus on completing one task at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. This will ensure the job completes quicker and with less stress thus giving you some time AND brain space back.
  3. Set deadlines: Very Important! Establish deadlines for your tasks and projects to create a sense of urgency and accountability to not only your team but to you also. Use tools like calendars or task management apps to keep track of deadlines and stay on schedule or simply create a basic spreadsheet and jot it down step by step. Check out our post on this here.
  4. Minimise distractions: Identify common distractions in your work environment and take steps to minimise them especially when sat at office desk. This might include turning off notifications on your phone or computer, setting specific times for checking email or social media, or finding a quiet workspace where you can focus without interruption.
  5. Delegate tasks: Recognise that you can’t do everything yourself and be willing to delegate tasks to others when necessary. Whether it’s hiring additional staff or outsourcing certain tasks to contractors or freelancers, delegating WILL free up your time to focus on the most important aspects of your business.
  6. Use time-blocking: Schedule specific blocks of time for different activities throughout your day, such as project work, client meetings, and administrative tasks. By allocating dedicated time for each task, you can better manage your workload and ensure that important tasks don’t get overlooked.
  7. Take regular breaks: Google Parkinsons Law – Avoid burnout by taking regular breaks throughout your day to rest and recharge. Schedule short breaks between tasks or set aside time for lunch and relaxation to help maintain your energy and focus. This works wonders for me.
  8. Commit to doing it bit by bit guys, it’s important for you, it’s important for your family and it will help the business grow.

By implementing these time management strategies, you can maximise your productivity and efficiency as a tradesman in the UK, allowing you to accomplish more in less time and achieve your business goals.

Remember preparation is the key, do it the day/evening before and simply write or type it down, it’s then out your head and you can rest knowing exactly what you have to do tomorrow.
