Why Tradesmen and Women Should Not Be Expected to Run a Business Alone

Tradesmen and women, such as heating and plumbing engineers, landscapers, joiners, electricians, and other skilled professionals, play a crucial role in our society. Their expertise ensures our homes are warm, our gardens flourish, our buildings stand strong, and our electrical systems function safely. However, we are also expected to be bookkeepers, recruitment consultants, project managers, sales executives, social media experts, receptionists and much much more,  it’s not only unrealistic but almost superhuman to expect ONE individual to be able to do all this. This blog post will explore why it is unreasonable to expect tradespeople to manage a business on their own and why hiring a business coach is essential for their success.

The Demands of Running a Business

Running a business involves a plethora of responsibilities, many of which require skills and knowledge that are vastly different from those needed to fit a new boiler or lay a patio for example. Here are some of the key tasks involved in running a business:

1. Bookkeeping and Accounting

Bookkeeping and accounting are fundamental to any business. This includes tracking income and expenses, managing invoices, handling payroll, and preparing financial statements. While these tasks are crucial, they require a solid understanding of financial principles and meticulous attention to detail.

2. Lead Generation and Sales

Lead generation and sales are the lifeblood of any business. This involves identifying potential clients, creating marketing strategies, networking, and closing deals. Effective salesmanship requires strong communication skills, persuasive abilities, and a deep understanding of market dynamics.

3. Project Management

Project management is essential for ensuring that jobs are completed on time, within budget, and to the client’s satisfaction. This involves planning, scheduling, coordinating resources, and managing teams. Effective project management requires organisation, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

4. Recruitment and HR Management

Recruitment and human resource management are critical for building a competent and motivated team. This includes hiring the right people, providing training, managing performance, and ensuring compliance with employment laws. Good HR management requires interpersonal skills, empathy, and knowledge of labor regulations.

5. Customer Service

Customer service is vital for maintaining client satisfaction and building a positive reputation. This involves handling inquiries, addressing complaints, and ensuring a high level of service. Excellent customer service requires patience, communication skills, and a client-focused mindset.

6. Compliance and Legal Issues

Compliance and legal issues are areas that every business must navigate. This includes adhering to industry regulations, health and safety standards, and tax laws. Understanding and managing legal compliance requires specialized knowledge and attention to detail.

The Superhuman Expectation

Expecting tradespeople to handle all these responsibilities on their own is akin to expecting them to possess superhuman abilities. While they are experts in their trades, running a business involves an entirely different skill set. Here’s why it’s almost impossible to do it all alone:

Lack of Training

Most tradespeople receive extensive training in their specific field but little to no training in business management. This lack of formal education in business-related areas puts them at a significant disadvantage when trying to manage the multifaceted aspects of running a company.

Time Constraints

The nature of trade work is physically demanding and time-consuming. Tradespeople often work long hours on-site, leaving little time and energy to focus on business management tasks. Balancing these demands can lead to burnout and decreased productivity.

Stress and Burnout

The stress of managing both the operational and administrative aspects of a business can be overwhelming. Without proper support, tradespeople can quickly become overburdened, leading to burnout and negatively impacting both their personal well-being and their business.

Risk of Financial Mismanagement

Without a solid understanding of financial management, tradespeople are at risk of making costly mistakes. Poor financial decisions can lead to cash flow problems, increased debt, and ultimately, business failure.

Inconsistent Lead Generation

Effective lead generation requires ongoing effort and strategy. Tradespeople may struggle to maintain a consistent pipeline of new clients, leading to fluctuations in workload and income. This inconsistency can make it difficult to sustain and grow a business.

The Role of a Tradecoach

This is where a business coach like me comes in. A business coach, especially one with experience in the construction and trades industry, can provide invaluable support and guidance. But how many business coaches do you know who have build a construction business from scratch with no experience or contacts AND taken it all the way to sale of the business who now works with over 50 trade businesses across all sectors?

I know my industry and the answer is a big fat ZERO….who have completed all of that….

Let’s look at why a business coach can help your trade business in the UK or across the globe.

Expertise and Experience

I bring a wealth of expertise and experience in managing and growing businesses. I understand the unique challenges tradespeople face and can offer practical solutions based on proven strategies.

Tailored Guidance

Every business is different. I can provide tailored advice that takes into account the specific needs and goals of a tradesperson’s business. This personalised approach ensures that my guidance is relevant and effective.

I provide a level of accountability that is hard to achieve on your own. Regular check-ins and progress reviews ensure that tradespeople stay on track and make consistent progress toward their goals.

Skill Development

I help tradespeople develop the skills they need to succeed in business. This includes financial management, marketing, sales, and leadership skills. By building these competencies, tradespeople can become more confident and capable business owners.

Strategic Planning

I assist in developing a strategic plan that outlines clear goals and the steps needed to achieve them. This roadmap provides direction and helps tradespeople stay focused on long-term success.

Stress Reduction

By taking on some of the burden of business management, I help reduce stress and prevent burnout. This allows tradespeople to focus on what they do best—providing excellent service to their clients.

Personal Experience: The Trade Coach Advantage

At Trade Coach, I understand the unique challenges that tradespeople face because I’ve been there. I built, grew, and sold my own construction business with the help of a business coach, and I know firsthand how transformative the experience can be. Here’s why working with Trade Coach can make all the difference:

“It’s vital my clients know that everything (from the coaching side) done in Tradecoach is by me and only me. I do not employ sub-standard ex corporate people to coach my clients, over my dead body will that ever happen”

Proven Success

I have a track record of helping tradespeople achieve their business goals. My clients have successfully grown their businesses, improved their financial management, and increased their client base with my guidance. Almost all earn over £100k within less than 12 months and multiple over £300k. Note I do not claim to make you £5m in the next 12 months like some of my competition – it’s not gonna happen for 99.9% of people reading this – sorry!

Industry Knowledge

My team has extensive experience in the construction and trades industry. We understand the specific challenges and opportunities that tradespeople encounter, and I tailor my coaching to address these unique factors, my team help me with other more technical/IT stuff.

Empathy and Understanding

I approach every client with empathy and understanding. I know how tough this is and how hard it is to juggle the demands of running a business while providing excellent service. My goal is to support our clients every step of the way, making their journey as smooth and successful as possible.

Commitment to Your Success

At Trade Coach, we are committed to your success. I measure my success by the achievements of my clients, simple as that and I’m dedicated to helping you reach your full potential as a business owner. in my opinion it’s paramount that you do this not only for you but for your family too.

Don’t Go It Alone

While tradesmen and women are highly skilled professionals, expecting them to run a business on their own is unrealistic and unfair. The demands of business management are extensive and require a different set of skills that most tradespeople have not had the opportunity to develop. This is why hiring a business coach is so important.

A business coach provides the expertise, guidance, and support that tradespeople need to successfully manage and grow their businesses. At Trade Coach, we understand the unique challenges you face because we’ve been there ourselves. We are here to help you achieve your business goals and turn your business into a thriving enterprise.
